Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah
Former Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, has been appointed by President John Dramani Mahama as the Presidential Special Envoy for Reparations, a move that underscores Ghana’s renewed commitment to advancing the global reparations agenda for Africa and its diaspora.
The appointment forms part of Mahama’s “Reset Agenda,” which seeks to restore integrity, equity, and strategic leadership in Ghana’s domestic and international engagements.
Dr. Spio-Garbrah, a seasoned diplomat, economist, and former Minister of Communications, Education, and Trade, brings decades of experience in international relations and advocacy to his new role.
He has previously served as Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States and as Chief Executive Officer of the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation (CTO).
As Presidential Special Envoy, Dr. Spio-Garbrah is expected to engage with African governments, multilateral institutions, and global partners to champion the call for reparations for the historical injustices of slavery and colonialism. His appointment reinforces Ghana’s position as a leading voice in the continental dialogue on justice and restitution.
