Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah
The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has formally requested clarification from the Presidential Special Envoy for Reparations, Ambassador Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, regarding his use of the academic title “Dr.”
In a letter dated July 27, 2026, and signed by GTEC, the Commission said it had taken note of Mr. Spio-Garbrah’s use of the title “Dr.” in reference to himself as “Amb. Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah.”
According to GTEC, it is concerned about the use of academic titles that have not been duly earned or conferred through a recognized academic process.
“The use of such titles—particularly when lacking formal academic validation—can be misleading and is inconsistent with established academic protocols and standards governing the conferment and use of academic ranks in Ghana,” the Commission stated.
To clarify the matter, GTEC has requested that Mr. Spio-Garbrah provide documentation detailing:
- the name of the institution that awarded the doctorate;
- whether the doctorate is an earned or honorary degree;
- the date it was conferred; and
- the process through which it was conferred.
The Commission stated that if the requested documentation cannot be provided, Mr. Spio-Garbrah would be expected to cease using the title “Dr.” without delay.
GTEC further requested that he provide verifiable evidence that the title has been removed from all relevant public and professional platforms, including official documents, institutional profiles, websites, letterheads and any other public representations.
The Commission’s letter forms part of its ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with academic standards governing the use of academic titles in Ghana.
At the time of publication, Mr. Spio-Garbrah had not publicly responded to GTEC’s request.
