As Ghana steps up efforts to modernize and clean up its artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sector, all eyes are turning to GoldKacha—a mercury-free gold recovery technology that is rapidly becoming a game changer in the industry.
Developed and introduced in Ghana by Commodity Monitor Limited, the GoldKacha system offers an efficient, environmentally friendly alternative to mercury-based processing. Endorsed by the Ghana Association of Small-Scale Gold Miners, the technology is already being adopted across mining communities for its ability to improve gold recovery rates, protect the environment, and ensure safer working conditions for miners.
At the upcoming Mining in Motion Summit, taking place from June 2–4, 2025, in Accra, GoldKacha will feature prominently in a panel discussion titled “Technology & Innovation: Advancing Efficiency and Removing Mercury from the ASGM Process.”
The session will include insights from key institutions such as the Ghana Chamber of Mines, ECOWAS Chamber of Mines, the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, and Ghana’s Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation.
GoldKacha’s rise reflects a broader national shift. As part of its commitment under the Minamata Convention on Mercury, Ghana is actively working to phase out mercury in small-scale mining. Efforts include the planetGOLD Ghana project, funded by the Global Environment Facility, which is supporting nationwide workshops on mercury-free technologies. The World Bank is also backing capacity-building programs through the Africa Environmental Health and Pollution Management Program, led by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Ministry of Environment.
Public sector initiatives are also accelerating change. The Minerals Commission is rolling out a drone piloting program to bolster oversight and digital monitoring of mining activities—complementing private sector solutions like GoldKacha in promoting sustainable, responsible mining.
Organized by the Ashanti Green Initiative, led by Oheneba Kwaku Duah, Prince of the Ashanti Kingdom, in collaboration with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, World Bank, and the World Gold Council, the Mining in Motion Summit 2025 is poised to be a landmark moment for technology and environmental stewardship in Ghana’s gold mining industry.
