The Majority Leader of Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has confirmed that the Member of Parliament for Asutifi North, Ebenezer Kwaku Addo has been arraigned before court in connection with an alleged attack on a team from the National Intelligence and Monitoring Office (NAIMOS) at Parliament House.
Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, Ayariga explained that he received a call from the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka, informing him that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) had requested to meet the MP for interrogation.
According to him, the MP honoured his invitation and reported to his office. “I invited the member, he came to my office, and I was trying to reach Muntaka. When I couldn’t reach him, I had to ask the member to go. Later, Muntaka returned my call, and I informed him that the MP was ready to meet whoever he should see,” he recounted.
He said it was later agreed that the MP should report to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters the following morning for processing.
“This morning, he went to the CID Headquarters with our Majority Chief Whip and his lawyer. They received him, took him through the necessary processes, and not quite long ago, I received a call that he has been taken to court. As we speak, he is actually being arraigned,” Ayariga disclosed.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, had earlier directed the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters to take over investigations into last Saturday’s attack on the Director of Operations of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) and his team at Hwidiem in the Ahafo Region.
A statement signed by the Director-General of Police Public Affairs, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Grace Ansah-Akrofi, confirmed that the Member of Parliament for Asutifi North, Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, has been invited to assist in the ongoing investigation.
According to preliminary police findings, the NAIMOS Director and his team were conducting an operation against illegal miners at Bronikrom near Hwidiem when they intercepted several suspects and retrieved weapons and vehicles, including a Smith & Wesson pistol, ammunition, an unregistered Range Rover, and other items.
While the team was preparing to hand over the suspects to the Hwidiem Police Station, the MP reportedly arrived at the scene with a group of men and demanded the immediate release of the suspects. When his demand was not granted, the group allegedly overpowered the officers, forcibly released the suspects, and chased the NAIMOS team from the area.
A mob of about 600 people, believed to have been incited by the MP, later attacked the police station, vandalizing vehicles and damaging property, including setting the NAIMOS Director’s vehicle ablaze. Reinforcement teams from the Ahafo Regional Command were deployed to restore calm.
The police said peace was eventually restored through the intervention of the Zongo Chief of Hwidiem, who helped mediate the situation and ensure the safe evacuation of the NAIMOS officials.
The Ghana Police Service has strongly condemned the attack and warned against interference in law enforcement operations. A special operation has been launched to identify and arrest those behind the violence
Calm has since been restored to Hwidiem and its surrounding areas, while security has been reinforced to prevent further disturbances.
