The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, says the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) takes exceptional pride in the cancellation of the controversial Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML) revenue assurance contracts, following its investigation into the deal.
Speaking on The KSM Show on Wednesday, November 5, Agyebeng revealed that the OSP’s detailed probe and subsequent press conference played a decisive role in prompting the Presidency to act swiftly.
“Right after our press conference on Thursday, within 24 hours, the President had come out to cancel the SML contracts,” Mr. Agyebeng stated. “We take exceptional pride in that, and the Presidency even referred to our investigation as a reason for the decision. That’s something we are proud of.”
The OSP launched its investigation into SML following concerns of potential corruption, procurement breaches, and value-for-money irregularities in the multi-million-dollar contract between SML and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
Agyebeng said the action taken by the Presidency was a validation of the OSP’s growing influence as a watchdog institution capable of driving accountability at the highest levels of government.
He noted that the OSP’s mandate extends beyond prosecution to include prevention — a strategic focus he said is already reshaping attitudes toward corruption in both public and private sectors.
“We have made the OSP so effective that it’s now a household name. People think twice before acting corruptly because they fear what could happen if the OSP sees it. That’s a beautiful legacy,” he said.
While acknowledging that his work has attracted criticism and even personal attacks, Agyebeng maintained that such opposition only strengthens his resolve to ensure that no one is above the law.
“As for petitions for removal, that’s freedom of expression,” he remarked. “But when criticism becomes personal, even down to complaints about my dressing, then it’s not about the work anymore.”
The Special Prosecutor reaffirmed the OSP’s commitment to its anti-corruption mission, stressing that the office will continue to pursue cases and preventive measures that protect the public purse and uphold good governance.
