The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) is upgrading the capacity of the Anwomaso–Ahodwo (K1–K2) transmission line in Kumasi from about 360 megawatts (MW) to approximately 1,000MW.
GRIDCo Chief Executive Officer, Ing Frank Asirifi Otchere, disclosed this at a briefing at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council on Monday(November 5), saying the upgrade is intended to increase the volume of electricity that can be transmitted to meet demand in Kumasi and northern Ghana.
He said the project involved replacing the old transmission conductors and towers with new infrastructure designed to carry higher loads. The foundations and towers have been installed, while the contractor is currently stringing the conductors.
Ing Otchere said GRIDCo was targeting the end of November 2026 to complete the transmission line works.
He also disclosed that the company had installed and commissioned a 145 MVA transformer at its Ridge substation, replacing an existing 66 MVA unit.
In addition, GRIDCo is working to add a fifth feeder to supply the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in Kumasi. The project is expected to be completed by December and add approximately 80MW of capacity to the Ridge substation.
In a joint notice issued on Friday (October 29), GRIDCo and ECG said the Anwomaso–Ahodwo (K1–K2) transmission line upgrade had reached 70 per cent completion.
The companies announced scheduled power outages in affected communities between October 30 and November 29, excluding weekends, from 9am to 5pm on designated days to allow the works to proceed safely.
Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene said the regional administration had received complaints from consumers about power interruptions over the past month and stressed the need for effective communication on the works and their timelines.
He said improving electricity generation would not benefit consumers if the power produced could not be transmitted to them, adding that the media and other stakeholders had a role in explaining the ongoing works and expected completion period to the public.
