As part of the global celebration of Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSME) Day, AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine has recognized the immense contributions of local entrepreneurs to economic development and community wellbeing.
A special durbar was held on 26 June to honour outstanding MSMEs who have demonstrated excellence and resilience by applying skills acquired through the Mine’s Enterprise and Skills Development Programme, under the 10-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP).
Speaking at the event, officials praised the hard work, innovation, and perseverance of local MSMEs, highlighting their pivotal role in driving grassroots economic activity and supporting livelihoods in the Obuasi area.
A major highlight of the durbar was the official launch of the Obuasi Entrepreneurship and Innovation Challenge—a transformative initiative aimed at empowering youth with creative business ideas.
The Challenge is being delivered in collaboration with Absa Bank Ghana Ltd., Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) – Obuasi Campus, and the Ghana Enterprises Agency – Obuasi.
Designed as a core component of the SEDP, the Challenge seeks to harness the potential of young entrepreneurs to create jobs, reduce unemployment, and drive sustainable community development. Organizers described the programme as “a movement that will help shape the future of Obuasi’s economy and expand opportunities for young people.”
In a statement, AngloGold Ashanti extended its congratulations to all MSMEs for their continuous contributions to local growth and innovation, noting that their success stories embody the true spirit of entrepreneurship.
As Obuasi looks to the future, the collaboration between the private sector, academia, and government agencies signals a bold new chapter in inclusive economic empowerment—anchored by the creativity, ambition, and enterprise of its people.
