Minister Designate for Fisheries and Aquaculture: Hon. Emelia Arthur
Fisheries stakeholders have followed keenly the vetting of the Minister Designate for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur.
Observing the vetting, we have appreciated the level of competence and deep knowledge she has in the fisheries and related matters because of her past experience as Deputy Regional Minister and DCE of fishing constituencies in the Western Region of Ghana.
Explaining the Blue Economy Commission, she proposed to promote sustainable development of the ocean and fisheries resources beyond the narrowed captured fisheries. She indicated that she will work with partners to review the Landing beach construction projects and seek the most efficient means of completing the projects.
Arthur indicated that improving the premix fuel management would be one of her priorities to improve delivery, transparency and efficient use of the 53% community development fund from the premix fuel proceeds.
She also indicated that developing aquaculture for growth, jobs and prosperity would be her priority too. She indicated that she will work with stakeholders to improve access to financial facilities for women fishers by linking them to fish markets and existing financial facilities and loan opportunities to be created by the establishment of Women Development Bank.
The Minister designate for Fisheries and Aquaculture, explained that she will work with the other ministries to improve basic education in fisheries communities to promote high school enrolment.
To address the impacts of galamsey on fisheries, she explained that there was the need for multi-sectoral approach to address the galamsey activities and clean the polluted rivers.
From her vetting fisheries stakeholders are satisfied with her answers, especially her insight and practical proposals to developing the Fisheries and Aquaculture in Ghana.
