At least three foreigners are among the 422 suspects arrested in connection with the operations of unapproved loan apps in Accra.
A joint collaboration between the Cyber Security Authority, Bank of Ghana (BoG) and the Economic and Organized Crime Organization (EOCO) has resulted in the arrest of over 422 operators of digital lending apps (loan apps) located in the Greater
Accra Region.
It follows a swoop by the three collaborating institutions in the early hours of Monday, July 10, 2023, as part of a Joint Cybersecurity Committee operation.
The actions of the operators of these apps include cyberbullying, extortion, abuse of customer data and privacy, death threats, and intentional libel amongst others.
Speaking at a joint news conference in Accra by the three institutions, EOCO boss Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah “So 422, we have 419 Ghanaians and three foreigners.””
“The foreigners are a Chinese, Pakistani and an Indian,” she said.
