The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), in conjunction with the Minerals Commission, held a one-day stakeholder sensitization with the Association of Sand Winners within the Ho and Ho West enclaves on November 24, 2025, at the Regional Head Office in Ho.
The meeting aimed to address issues relating to sand mining operations in the region and find lasting solutions to challenges such as illegal sand winning and failure to reclaim legacy pits.
Addressing the meeting, Ing. Maxwell Zu-Cudjoe, Acting Regional Director of the EPA, directed executives of the sand winners association to strictly adhere to mining laws and develop reclamation plans.
He also announced plans for the first quarter of 2026 to educate landowners, contractors, and association executives on environmental protection and land reclamation.
He assured the association that the compliance and enforcement team would be more proactive in regulating sand mining activities and enforcing the law.
Joseph Frimpong, Regional Director of the Minerals Commission, reiterated the need to strengthen enforcement to ensure order within the sector.
He mentioned that the commission is forming enforcement committees across various enclaves in the region, comprising representatives from the Minerals Commission, EPA, MCEs, and DCEs of various districts and municipalities.
On behalf of the sand winners association, the leader assured that they were taking measures to reclaim all legacy pits within the region while continuing to educate and sensitize members to adhere to mining laws governing their operations.
