The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has announced new measures to eliminate extortion at all airports under its management, including the introduction of a “mystery shopping” initiative to identify and expose offenders.
The decision was reached at a high-level stakeholder facilitation meeting held on Wednesday, August 5.
Under the new measures, personnel found engaging in extortion or begging will face disciplinary action, be publicly identified through a “name and shame” campaign, and be barred from working at any GACL-operated airport.
GACL has also established a dedicated hotline, 0542175636 (Call, WhatsApp or SMS), for passengers to report incidents involving airport personnel and service providers.
The company advised travellers to request airport identification cards from officials when necessary, obtain receipts for all payments, and report suspected misconduct, providing the date, time, location, officer’s name and the agency involved.
According to GACL, the measures are aimed at safeguarding the reputation of Ghana’s airports and supporting efforts to position the country as the preferred aviation hub in West Africa.
