The Ghana Police Service has arrested two suspects, including the alleged gang leader, in connection with the deadly robbery attack that claimed the life of Berekum Chelsea footballer Dominic Frimpong.
According to a terse statement by the police, one of the suspects sustained gunshot injuries during an exchange of fire with a police intelligence team during the operation.
The injured suspect has since been transported to a medical facility and is receiving treatment under police guard.
The arrests mark a significant breakthrough in investigations into the violent ambush on the Berekum Chelsea team bus, which occurred as the club returned from a Ghana Premier League fixture against Samartex in Samreboi.
Frimpong, 20, died after suffering gunshot wounds when armed men attacked the team’s bus. The club reported that “masked men wielding guns and assault rifles” blocked the road and opened fire as the driver attempted to reverse to safety. Players and officials reportedly fled into nearby bushes to escape the gunfire.
Police say the bus was carrying about 30 players and officials at the time of the attack, which was carried out by a group of approximately six armed men.
