GHANA: Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu describes December 7 election rigged

The Minority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament and Member of parliament for Tamale South Haruna Iddrisu has described the December 7 Presidential and Parliamentary elections as a rigged one.

Registering his displeasure shortly after the declaration of incumbent Akufo-Addo as President, Haruna said “This is the Ghana Akufo-Addo believed in. Our democratic credentials have been deeply bruised,

He added “Postesterity will harshly remember Akuf0-Addo for the number of innocent Ghanaians who died or got maimed for him to become a president in 2020 elections.

Victiory

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been declared the winner of the 2020 presidential elections, defeating John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress, chair of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, announced on Wednesday (9 December).

Akufo-Addo won by 51.59% of the total votes cast as against Mahama’s 6,214,889 representing 47.36%. Akufo-Addo polled a total of 6,70,413 votes out of the total votes of 14, 434, 574.

Crowds of jubilant supporters have hit the streets in Accra and other parts of the nation to celebrate the victory of the 76-year-old New Patriotic Party (NPP) leader.

Akufo-Addo defeated John Mahama by 53.8% to 44.4% in the 2012 election.

Ghana’s elections have been historically close, with Mahama narrowly winning against Akufo-Addo in 2012 with 50.7%. In that elections, Akufo-Addo unsuccessfully challenged Mahama’s victory in the courts.

It is expected that the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will soon speak to the media to concede to the incumbent president.

Akufo-Addo’s victory means the country is set to kick-start an economy that has been hit by the COVID-19 pandemic but has been tipped to recover faster than earlier predicted.

It was his fourth shot at the presidency after his first successful run on a third attempt. Akufo-Addo said on Sunday that he hoped to be retained on 7 December to finish off his tenure and, in his own words, “build on the solid foundation laid in the first term”.
