The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has projected warmer-than-average temperatures across most parts of the country, with variations expected from one region to another.
The projection forms part of the agency’s updated September–November and October–December 2026 seasonal outlooks, issued amid the development of a potentially strong to very strong El Niño event.
GMet said the developing El Niño was expected to continue strengthening through January to March 2027, with an 83% probability of reaching strong to very strong intensity during that period.
The agency noted that Ghana’s experience with previous El Niño events showed that their effects on weather conditions varied across the country and depended significantly on the state of the tropical Atlantic Ocean.
Its observations and forecasts for 2026 have already highlighted contrasting weather conditions, including exceptionally heavy rainfall and widespread flooding in parts of southern Ghana in June, followed by prolonged dry spells affecting farming activities in parts of northern Ghana.
The updated seasonal outlooks also indicate predominantly normal-to-below-normal rainfall across much of Ghana, although above-normal rainfall is expected in some areas.
GMet’s projections highlight the potential for variations in temperature and rainfall across the country as the El Niño event develops.
