The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has directed the Board of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) to suspend the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer for two weeks with immediate effect.
In a letter dated June 5, 2026, the Minister said the suspension follows the CEO’s announcement on June 3 that KATH was unable to admit new emergency cases because its Accident and Emergency Centre was full.
According to the Minister, the CEO admitted during a meeting on June 4 that the announcement was made contrary to directives issued by President John Dramani Mahama.
The Minister also cited comments made by the Head of Public Affairs of KATH during an interview on Channel One Newsroom regarding the suspension of emergency admissions, stating that the remarks were also inconsistent with the President’s directives.
The KATH Board has been instructed to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the authority under which the statements were made and whether management approved the media interview. The Board is expected to submit its findings within two weeks and apply appropriate sanctions where necessary.
The suspended CEO is required to report to the Minister upon the expiry of the suspension period.
