President John Dramani Mahama has approved a two-year contract extension for Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, allowing him to continue in office beyond his statutory retirement date of December 28, 2025.
The decision, communicated through a letter signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, follows the recommendation of the Police Council and is in line with the governing provisions of the Ghana Police Service.
According to the letter, the President’s approval will take effect from 28th December 2025, immediately after IGP Yohuno attains the mandatory retirement age. The re-engagement grants him an additional two years of service, during which he will continue to lead the Police Service and oversee all responsibilities attached to the office.
The Presidency emphasized that the extension reflects the Council’s “firm conviction” that Dr. Yohuno’s leadership remains critical to sustaining ongoing police reforms, strengthening operational effectiveness, and ensuring stability within the service at a crucial time.
“You are kindly requested to indicate your acceptance of this re-engagement in writing within three days upon receipt of this letter,” the correspondence stated.
The letter was copied to the Vice President, the Chief of Staff, and the Minister for the Interior.
Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, who officially assumed office as IGP earlier this year, has been credited with efforts to enhance policing standards, improve public trust, and lead key security operations.
