The Ghana Prisons Service, in collaboration with the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) and Aboboyaa Company Limited, on February 20, 2026, officially launched “Capital Behind Bars,” an innovative rehabilitation and skills development initiative.
The programme is designed to equip inmates with practical technical skills in the assembly of motorbikes and tricycles (aboboyaa), positioning them for gainful employment and entrepreneurship upon release.
Speaking at the launch, the Chief Executive Officer of MASLOC, Abigail Elorm Mensah, said the initiative aligns with national development priorities by reducing recidivism, promoting rehabilitation, and strengthening local production capacity.
She emphasised that inmates who acquire employable skills and hands-on technical experience are better positioned to reintegrate successfully into society. She described the collaboration as a shared commitment to sustainable reintegration and economic empowerment.
The Director-General of Prisons, Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, stressed that creating a safer Ghana requires a holistic approach to corrections.
She noted that the initiative goes beyond training, describing it as a structured business model under the Think Prison 360 Degrees Initiative, driven by Prisons Industries and Business Limited (PRINDBUZ LTD).
According to her, PRINDBUZ LTD serves as the commercial vehicle for facilitating business engagements with partners such as Aboboyaa Company Limited.
She encouraged corporate bodies and institutions to collaborate with the Ghana Prisons Service through PRINDBUZ LTD to advance rehabilitation, enterprise development, and national growth.
The initiative marks a progressive shift from incarceration to transformation, reinforcing the Service’s reform agenda centred on rehabilitation, skills acquisition, and national development.
