Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor has launched a GH¢598 million turnkey electrification project in the Volta Region to connect 206 underserved communities to Ghana’s national electricity grid.
The project, implemented under the Rural Electricity Acceleration and Urban Intensification Initiative (REIP), forms part of the government’s Big Push Agenda to accelerate electricity connections in unelectrified communities.
According to Mr Jinapor, the project will cover 18 districts in the Volta Region, as government works to extend electricity access across four priority regions this year.
The minister said the initiative goes beyond expanding electricity access, with additional investments aimed at improving the reliability and sustainability of power supply in the region.
As part of the infrastructure works, government is undertaking construction of the 45-kilometre Asiekpe–Ho 161kV transmission line and a new 161/34.5kV Bulk Supply Point (BSP) at Ho.
The facilities are expected to increase transmission capacity and improve power reliability along the Asiekpe–Ho–Kadjebi corridor.
Mr Jinapor launched the project on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama. He was joined by Volta Regional Minister James Gunu, Ketu North MP Eric Edem Agbana, and other power sector stakeholders.
The minister said the investment is intended to expand access to electricity, improve livelihoods and support economic activity in underserved communities.
