MTN Ghana has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to digital inclusion and female empowerment through continued investment in the National Girls-in-ICT Initiative.
The flagship programme, spearheaded by the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, seeks to equip young Ghanaian girls and their teachers with essential ICT skills to prepare them for the digital future.
Since its inception, the initiative has trained over 13,000 girls aged 9 to 15 and 1,300 teachers across 11 regions of Ghana, including North East, Western North, Ahafo, Bono East, Bono, Savannah, Northern, Eastern, Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Volta Regions. Participants have acquired practical skills in coding, website design, game development, and animation.
In 2021, as part of its 25th-anniversary celebrations, MTN Ghana pledged GHS 10 million over three years to support the initiative. That commitment has since expanded to GHS 17.6 million between 2021 and 2025, positioning MTN as one of the largest private-sector contributors to Ghana’s digital empowerment agenda.

Speaking at the climax of the Volta Region edition of the programme, Adwoa Wiafe, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer at MTN Ghana, highlighted the strategic impact of the initiative:“At MTN, we believe in inclusivity — empowering girls, the differently abled, and all who deserve a chance. We are not just investing in words but in action. We want to ensure that every Ghanaian child, especially girls, can access practical, hands-on ICT education. The future belongs to those with digital skills. It’s not a luxury anymore; it’s a necessity.”
She added,“Our CEO, Stephen Blewett, always says the next big thing must come from Africa. We are here to help make that happen by providing the skills, tools, and platform.”

The Volta Region event marks the first of three regional editions planned for 2025, with Upper East and Upper West next in line. Meanwhile, the Ministry is working to establish a Trust Fund to sustain and expand the programme’s reach nationwide.
MTN Ghana’s support aligns with its broader vision to lead the delivery of a bold new digital world, and with its values of diversity, inclusion, and equitable access to opportunity. The telecom giant says it remains committed to bridging Ghana’s digital divide and empowering the next generation of female digital leaders.
