Bernard Baidoo
Bernard Baidoo, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate in the Akwatia by-election, has pledged to transform the community by reviving the fortunes of Ghana Consolidated Diamonds (GCD) and restoring the mining town’s place as a hub of prosperity.
“Akwatia’s name has always been tied to mining, and you cannot take that away. What we need is lawful, well-managed mining that truly benefits our people. Getting GCD back on track can employ thousands of people and reignite the local economy,” Baidoo said in his victory speech.
He recalled how the once-thriving mining company fell into decline, leaving the community in darkness both literally and figuratively. “There was a time when even GCD’s property had no electricity. Today, we have light here — and that is only the first step. This victory is the rebirth of Akwatia,” he added.
Baidoo emphasized that the by-election result was not just about politics but about restoring hope. “The people listened to our message, embraced it, and delivered this outcome. This mandate is about jobs, development, and ensuring that our resources translate into real change.”
The NDC candidate secured 18,199 votes, defeating Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who polled 15,235 votes, while Owusu Patrick of the Liberal People’s Party trailed with 82 votes.
Baidoo stressed that his team’s confidence was rooted in the community’s readiness for change. “We’ve always been very confident, not because of politics alone, but because the people are ready to rebuild. This is the beginning of a new Akwatia.”
