Newmont Africa, Ghana’s leading gold producer has contributed GHC3.176 billion in taxes, levies, royalties, and property rates to the government for the first half of 2024,
Notably, the Ahafo South Mine alone accounted for approximately GHC2.6 billion of this total.
Speaking during a press briefing in Sunyani, Samuel Osei, the manager of communications and external relations for Newmont Ahafo, highlighted the essential support needed for the Ahafo North project to maximise benefits for Ghana as Newmont continues to expand its operations.
“At the end of the first half of 2024, Newmont’s African operations, including the Ahafo South and Akyem mines, have paid around GHC3.176 billion in taxes to the Ghanaian government. Of this, Ahafo South alone contributed about 2.6 billion cedis through taxes, levies, and carried interest,” Osei stated.
“This underscores why full support for the Ahafo North project is crucial. Once Ahafo North is operational, it will significantly enhance government revenue and benefit the communities where we operate,” he added.
The Sunyani briefing aimed at updating stakeholders in the Bono and Ahafo Regions on the progress of the Newmont’s Ahafo North project.
This initiative involves constructing a new gold mine in the Tano North Municipality of the Ahafo Region, with an investment exceeding one billion dollars.
Osei provided an update on the project’s progress, noting that significant mining infrastructure is already in place. He also highlighted ongoing efforts to resettle communities affected by the project, with the construction of 210 resettlement homes currently underway.
“The construction includes offices, clinics, and other facilities, with 210 resettlement houses being built. Local companies are handling the construction, which involves one to six bedroom houses. This ensures that we compensate and resettle affected residents in compliance with legal and company commitments,” Osei explained.
Osei also emphasised Newmont’s substantial investments in social and community development initiatives aimed at improving the well-being of local populations and promoting sustainable development.
