The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has vowed to recover financial losses suffered by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) following the large-scale theft of over 1,300 containers of electrical cables.
He announced that assets belonging to those implicated in the crime would be seized and sold to offset the losses.
His statement follows the arrest of 14 suspects—10 Chinese nationals and four Ghanaians—who are believed to be behind the operation.
During an inspection of aluminium smelting facilities in Shai-Osudoku on Friday, March 28, authorities discovered stolen ECG cables that had been melted into blocks and processed into aluminium rods for export.
Intelligence gathered by the National Security Agency also revealed that the perpetrators had set up secret locations where they burned the cables to destroy evidence.
After visiting the smelting sites and a warehouse in Kpone, Minister Jinapor reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that those responsible face justice. He stressed that all assets linked to the suspects would be liquidated to help recover ECG’s financial losses.
Meanwhile, further investigations at the Atlas Dry Port Terminal and a Customs Bonded Warehouse in Tema have led to the discovery of 34 containers filled with tampered ECG cables and electrical meters.
