Two Chinese nationals have been arrested following a National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations (NAIMOS) Taskforce raid on illegal mining sites at Subrisu near Bekwai in the Western Region.
The operation, which took place at about 10:30 a.m. on Monday, uncovered active galamsey activities along the Subri River. The suspects were found mining with two excavators and other equipment on the riverbank.
According to authorities, their activities had severely polluted the Subri River and other nearby water bodies, while large portions of land within the area had also been heavily degraded.
During the operation, the taskforce dismantled several metallic gold-trapping platforms used by the illegal miners. Three heavy-duty water-pumping machines were also destroyed in an effort to disrupt the operations of the illegal mining network.
The two arrested Chinese nationals were transported to Accra and handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for further action.
NAIMOS says it will continue its surprise nationwide crackdowns as part of efforts to restore order and protect the country’s natural resources from illegal mining.
