Two people have died and 14 others, including a police officer, have been injured following disturbances during the celebration of the Yam Festival at Nchiraa in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region.
The incident occurred on Saturday, October 3, 2026, after the festival programme had ended.
According to the Bono Regional Police Command, the disturbances erupted at about 5:30 p.m. at the Four Junction as Nana Tabiri Yaw II and his sub-chiefs were being escorted to the chief’s palace.
Police said a gunshot was heard during the escort, after which disturbances broke out.
The bodies of the two deceased have been deposited at the Wenchi Methodist Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
Thirteen injured persons, including a police officer, sustained gunshot wounds and are receiving treatment, according to the Police.
The Wenchi Divisional Police has since restored calm in the area, with patrols intensified in Nchiraa.
