The University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) has successfully carried out four additional kidney transplant procedures, bringing the total number of kidney transplants performed at the facility to 15 since the programme began in June 2024.
According to the Centre, the latest transplant surgeries were conducted on May 25 and 26, 2026, involving four recipients and four living donors.
The procedures were performed under the leadership of UGMC Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Abdul Samed-Tanko, and Director of Medical Affairs, Dr. Baffoe Gyan, in collaboration with internationally renowned transplant surgeon Prof. Nadey Hakim, who is affiliated with leading international medical institutions, including the Cleveland Clinic UK.

UGMC said the successful transplants were the result of a coordinated effort by a multidisciplinary team comprising specialists from urology, general surgery, intensive care, theatre services, nephrology, cardiology and cardiothoracic care, anaesthesia, as well as allied health professionals, biomedical engineers, and other support staff.
The Centre noted that the achievement reflects its ongoing commitment to providing advanced specialist healthcare services and expanding access to life-saving medical interventions in Ghana.

UGMC performed its first kidney transplant procedures in June 2024, marking a major milestone in the country’s healthcare sector. With the latest surgeries, the Centre has now successfully conducted 15 kidney transplants over a two-year period.
Hospital management described the successful procedures as an important step in restoring hope to patients living with kidney disease and reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to improving health outcomes through specialized medical care.
The University of Ghana Medical Centre is one of Ghana’s leading tertiary healthcare institutions, providing specialized clinical services, medical training, and research.
