The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has clarified that six people—not twelve as earlier reported—died in Wednesday’s stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium during a recruitment exercise.
Brigadier General Evelyn Vivian Abraham-Kwabiah, Commander of the 37 Military Hospital, confirmed the figures after President John Mahama visited victims receiving treatment.
“A total of 28 casualties were brought in. Six were confirmed dead, five are in critical condition in the ICU, twelve are fairly critical, and the rest are stable,” she said.
The incident occurred around 6:20 a.m. when a surge of applicants breached security barriers and rushed the gates ahead of the scheduled screening.
GAF has extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

During his visit to the hospital’s emergency ward, the President received firsthand briefings from medical officials on the condition of the injured and the ongoing response efforts.
