A woman claiming to be from Accra has shared a personal account in a viral video, alleging that she tested positive for HIV after spending time in an illegal mining (galamsey) community outside the capital.
The authenticity of the video and the claims made by the woman have not been independently verified.
According to the woman, a neighbour came to live in her house, and the neighbour’s husband was working at an illegal mining site outside Accra. She said that after struggling to make a living through trading, she decided to join the couple at the mining community in search of economic opportunities.
The woman claimed that the physically demanding nature of mining work led her to seek alternative means of earning income. She alleged that she subsequently engaged in commercial sex work and was able to earn enough money to rent her own room and support herself.
She further claimed that after returning to Accra to visit her children, she fell ill and sought medical treatment. According to her account, doctors requested an HIV test, which she said returned a positive result.
In the video, the woman described the emotional impact of the alleged diagnosis and expressed anger over what she believed to be the source of her infection. She also made comments suggesting an intention to spread the virus, statements that have generated concern among viewers.
