Gold Fields Ghana is deepening its commitment to national development and community transformation through sustained local investment and social impact initiatives.
Speaking at the opening of the 2025 West African Mining and Power Expo (WAMPEX) in Accra on Wednesday, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Gold Fields Ghana, Elliot Twum, highlighted the company’s ongoing contribution to Ghana’s economy and its host communities.
“In the first quarter of 2025 alone, our total payments to the government amounted to GHS1.5 billion, while in-country procurement reached GHS2.3 billion,” Twum disclosed. “These figures are not just statistics — they represent a deliberate strategy to ensure our operations have direct and meaningful impact on the Ghanaian economy.”
Twum emphasized that Gold Fields’ development philosophy goes beyond compliance. Through its Gold Fields Ghana Foundation, the company is driving long-term investments in health, education, and infrastructure. Among its standout initiatives is the recently commissioned Tarkwa stadium, a gift to the community aimed at nurturing local talent and fostering youth development.
Another major legacy project is the conversion of the historic Tarkwa Avenue Hospital — believed to be the first hospital built in the Gold Coast — into a modern medical facility. “We want this to serve both our workforce and the broader community,” Twum said. “This is how we define shared value.”
Gold Fields’ development approach, according to Twum, is rooted in a blend of continuity and innovation. “Our commitment to our host country, communities, and people has remained unchanged,” he said. “But we have adapted to changing circumstances and challenges — and in doing so, we continue to be part of the change we want to see in Ghana.”
He concluded by reflecting on the broader significance of the company’s approach. “History is not just about the past; it’s about change — what stays the same, what evolves, and how we evolve. At Gold Fields, we are proud to be shaping a future where mining contributes positively and enduringly to Ghana’s progress.”
Gold Fields operates the Tarkwa and Damang mines in Ghana and remains one of the largest contributors to Ghana’s gold output and mining sector growth.
