Gold Fields has trained 50 state emergency and disaster management officials in cyanide and Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) incident management as part of efforts to strengthen emergency preparedness and response.
The training followed recommendations from a review of the company’s Emergency Preparedness and Response Plan, with a focus on improving the capacity of first responders and other key stakeholders to effectively manage potential cyanide-related and tailings incidents.
Participants were trained on tailings management guidelines, standards and procedures, Trigger Action Response Plans (TARPs), and protocols for managing cyanide and TSF incidents.
The programme also included a review of the 2024 tailings-related emergency simulation exercise and sessions on tailings management at Gold Fields.
As part of the programme, participants toured Gold Fields’ Tailings Storage Facilities to gain first-hand knowledge of the facilities, safeguards and operational arrangements supporting emergency preparedness.
Gold Fields said the initiative forms part of its commitment to proactive risk management and collaboration with stakeholders to enhance the safety of its employees and host communities.
