The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has denied reports alleging that its personnel were involved in the shooting and death of a young man at Akyem Hemang in the Eastern Region.
In a statement dated Friday (August 28), NAIMOS said it did not conduct any operation at Akyem Hemang or deploy personnel to the area at the time of the reported incident.
The Secretariat said its operations are centrally coordinated and authorised, and conducted in collaboration with recognised security and intelligence agencies, including the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Immigration Service, Bureau of National Intelligence and Narcotics Control Commission.
NAIMOS criticised the report for attributing the incident to the Secretariat without prior verification and called on Citi Newsroom and other media outlets that published the allegation to retract it, correct the record and apologise.
It also cautioned against automatically attributing activities involving uniformed personnel or unauthorised anti-illegal mining operations to NAIMOS.
The Secretariat reaffirmed its commitment to combating illegal mining and protecting Ghana’s water bodies, forests and lands, while urging the media and public to verify information before publication.
