The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has reported significant progress in the reclamation of degraded mining sites at Apedwa and Akyem Muoso following earlier enforcement action.
During a follow-up inspection on August 17, 2026, NAIMOS found that about 80 per cent of the degraded area at Apedwa had been reclaimed, with work ongoing to complete the restoration.
At Akyem Muoso, reclamation had also commenced, although progress was slower. The suspect involved requested additional time to complete the work, citing delays resulting from his earlier detention.
NAIMOS also observed significant improvement along the affected section of the River Bonemaa, where restoration works were nearing completion.
The Secretariat said it would continue monitoring both locations to ensure the reclamation works are completed and meet the required environmental standards.
The follow-up inspection forms part of NAIMOS’ approach of combining enforcement with environmental restoration, requiring persons responsible for degrading land and water bodies through illegal mining to undertake remedial work.
