Dr Dominic Ayine
Ghana’s Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, has announced that his office has completed the legal processes necessary to begin formal prosecution in the long-standing Akonta Mining case.
Addressing journalists on Monday, July 28, during the Government Accountability Series, Dr. Ayine confirmed that the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service had submitted a finalized docket on the case to his office.
The Attorney-General’s office, he said, has since reviewed the evidence and prepared charges, which have been returned to the police for the suspects to be formally charged and arraigned in court in the coming days.
“The police CID have completed a docket on the Akonta Mining case and submitted same to my office. We have prepared charges and sent them back to the CID for suspects to be formally charged before their arraignment in court,” Dr. Ayine stated.
Akonta Mining has faced public backlash over alleged illegal mining activities within forest reserves, most notably the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve.
Despite public denials by the company, various investigations were launched following mounting pressure from civil society organizations, environmental activists, and media exposés.The company, believed to be politically connected, became a lightning rod in the national conversation about illegal mining (galamsey), governance, and environmental protection.
