Global mining giant BHP has expressed strong interest in undertaking large-scale copper exploration in Zambia, signaling growing international confidence in the country’s mineral potential.
Speaking during a high-level meeting in Lusaka, BHP Head of Global Generative Exploration, Campbell McCuaig, said the company is increasingly focused on identifying large copper deposits that are difficult to detect using traditional exploration methods.
He noted that many of these deposits are buried deep underground or concealed beneath geological cover, making them harder to discover.
Mr. McCuaig explained that to overcome these challenges, BHP is employing advanced geological techniques and large-scale data analysis to identify what are known as mineral systems the combination of geological processes that lead to the formation of major copper deposits.

He also commended Zambia’s recent efforts to improve access to geoscience data, including the government backed airborne geophysical surveys and the digitization of geological information. He said these initiatives are critical in attracting global investment into the mining sector.
Meanwhile, Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development Permanent Secretary, Hapenga Kabeta, said collaboration with BHP aligns with the government’s goal of increasing copper production and attracting major international investors. He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting responsible and sustainable investment in the sector.
Dr. Kabeta emphasized that stronger collaboration between government, global mining companies, and local exploration firms will be essential in unlocking new mineral districts and driving long-term growth.

He further noted that Zambia remains one of the world’s most prospective regions for copper and that ongoing reforms are aimed at ensuring the country translates its mineral potential into tangible economic benefits.
The government is prioritizing early-stage exploration, improved access to geological data, and increased participation of local companies in global mining initiatives.
The meeting also focused on how Zambia can better align with modern global exploration strategies, including the use of advanced geoscience data and a mineral systems approach to identify large copper deposits located at depth or beneath geological cover.
