Ghana’s Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, Kojo Choi, has announced plans for the construction of a dedicated Maternal and Child Health and Nutrition Centre in Bongo in the Upper East Region.
The project, which is being undertaken in partnership with Korean NGO Friends of Hope (KFHI), will be located adjacent to the Bongo District Hospital and is aimed at improving healthcare services for pregnant women, nursing mothers, and infants in the area.
Ambassador Choi disclosed this following a meeting with the President of Friends of Hope, Mr. Charles Choi, where discussions focused on strengthening healthcare delivery in Bongo. He noted that construction of the facility is expected to commence in the second half of 2026, with completion scheduled for the latter part of 2027.
The proposed centre will provide essential maternal and child health services, as well as nutrition support, contributing to efforts to reduce maternal and infant mortality in the district.
Friends of Hope has been active in Ghana for over a decade, implementing projects in education, entrepreneurship, water resource development, and climate resilience in communities such as Bolgatanga and Tamale.
In Bongo, the organisation has also supported women’s economic empowerment through vocational training, including initiatives that enable local women to produce and export traditional Fugu garments to Korea.
Ambassador Choi described the new health facility as a significant step in deepening Ghana–Korea relations, emphasizing that the project represents a model of sustainable partnership.
He added that although the initiative will begin in Bongo, there are plans to replicate the model in other parts of the country if successfully implemented.
