Adabraka robbery scene
The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has arrested a suspect in connection with the daylight robbery at a jewellery shop area near the Adabraka Market in Accra, during which about GH¢7.5 million was stolen.
The Director-General of the CID, Commissioner of Police (COP) Lydia Yaako Donkor, announced the breakthrough while addressing the media on Thursday, December 31, following months of intelligence-led operations.
The robbery occurred on Saturday, November 2, when armed and masked gunmen attacked a Toyota Corolla parked near the Adabraka Market. The vehicle belonged to a gold dealer who had just concluded a transaction and was preparing to convey the cash to a bank.
Eyewitnesses said four heavily armed men fired warning shots in broad daylight to disperse residents and traders before forcibly opening the vehicle and carting away sacks of money.
“We deal in gold here, and we suddenly heard sporadic gunshots. We hid and locked our gates. We saw them forcing open the boot and carrying bags of money,” an eyewitness said.
Another witness said the attackers arrived in a Toyota Highlander, fired multiple gunshots, and scattered some money into the air to distract onlookers before fleeing the scene.
According to police, preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects were armed with AK-47 assault rifles. In the course of the attack, a pregnant woman sustained injuries.
COP Donkor said the arrested suspect, identified as Saleem Mohammed, also known as Fawata, was picked up on November 3, 2025, at a hospital in Ashaiman, where he had sought medical attention.
She said efforts are ongoing to arrest the remaining accomplices and recover the stolen money, adding that investigations into the case are continuing.
The CID assured the public of its commitment to combating organised violent crime and improving public safety in commercial hubs across the country.
