The Ghana Police Service has arrested 36 suspects following the death of a police officer who was attacked by a mob at Gindabour in the Sawla District of the Savannah Region.
The deceased officer, General Constable Redeemer Owusu, was reportedly attacked on September 16, 2026, after he and other officers encountered a motorbike rider during highway patrol duties along the Gindabour-Kenkyen community road.
According to a preliminary police account, the rider diverted into the bush after seeing the police vehicle. The officers followed up from another direction and found him unconscious on a bush road.
The officers picked up the rider and were transporting him to hospital when he died.
The Police said news of the rider’s death subsequently led to an attack on the officers by a mob from the community.
General Constable Owusu died in the attack, while other officers sustained varying degrees of injuries. The Police vehicle was also damaged.
The bodies of the deceased officer and the motorbike rider have been conveyed to the Damongo Morgue for preservation and autopsy.
Following the incident, the Inspector-General of Police deployed investigators and intelligence officers to assist with the investigation.
Reinforcement teams from Damongo, Bole, Sawla, Tuna, Kalba and the Regional Intelligence Team have also been deployed to the area to strengthen security and maintain law and order.
The 36 suspects arrested are currently in Police custody assisting with investigations and are expected to be put before the court.
