Eco-Conscious Citizens and concerned citizens are calling on the Government of Ghana to declare the Atewa Forest Reserve a National Park to protect it from what they describe as ongoing environmental degradation.
The civil society organisation says the forest, protected since 1926, is a globally significant biodiversity hotspot under threat, with risks to endangered species, key watersheds, and the millions of people who depend on it.

Atewa Forest is the source of the Ayensu, Birim and Densu rivers, which supply drinking water to more than five million people. The group warns that its destruction poses both ecological and public health risks, echoing concerns that “when you destroy a forest, you destroy a pharmacy.”
The petition is urging government to resource the Forestry Commission and NAIMOS to halt degradation, establish a rapid response team near the reserve, strengthen local enforcement through performance targets for security and district authorities, and ultimately upgrade the forest to National Park status.
It adds that such a designation would honour conservation efforts dating back to 1926 and provide the highest level of protection for Atewa’s biodiversity, water resources, and cultural heritage.
