Chairman of the McDan Group, Dr Daniel McKorley, has shared a thought-provoking message about why many job seekers struggle to land opportunities despite attending multiple interviews.
According to him, the core issue is not just confidence but a lack of real competence, skills, and knowledge necessary for the role.
In his latest post, Dr. McKorley highlighted a common misconception—that confidence alone can secure a job. He stressed that while motivation and self-belief are important, they cannot replace actual expertise. “Forget the hype. No amount of confidence can cover up a lack of competence,” he stated, emphasizing that hiring managers prioritize skills over mere enthusiasm.
He cautioned against the growing trend of people presenting themselves as experts online without mastering their craft. “Forming online expertise without substance is just noise,” he warned, adding that the real key to success is first learning and mastering one’s field before learning how to sell oneself effectively.
Dr. McKorley advised job seekers to be honest with themselves about their capabilities. If interviews are not yielding results, he encouraged them to ask: “Do I actually know my craft, or am I just packaging empty confidence?”
His message serves as a wake-up call for job seekers to invest in their skills and expertise before stepping into interview rooms.
“The formula is simple: learn and master your art first, then learn how to sell yourself. When you combine competence with the ability to articulate your value, you become unstoppable,” he concluded.
