The Eastern Nzema Traditional Council has called for Ghana Gas to be renamed Atuabo Gas, arguing that the facility’s location and connection to the local community should be reflected in its name.
The call was made during a courtesy visit by the Council, also known as the Ellembelle Maanle, to the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.
Speaking at the meeting, acting President of the Eastern Nzema Traditional Nana Bonya Kofi, questioned why the Atuabo-based gas facility is referred to as Ghana Gas when other major national facilities carry names linked to their locations.
“You don’t have a Ghana Oil Refinery. You have the oil refinery, because the oil refinery is in Ghana. Now you have a Accra Airport. You don’t call it Ghana Airport. You have the Akosombo Dam. You don’t call it Ghana Dam,” the representative said.
“So, what has gone on? Why would you have Ghana Gas and not Atuabo Gas?”
The Council also urged the authorities to take action on the long-awaited Phase Two of the gas project.
“Honourable, take action. You are an action man. I’m quite disappointed. We are still waiting for Phase Two,” the representative said.
The Council expressed hope that the completion of Phase Two would provide an opportunity to further discuss the proposal to name the facility Atuabo Gas.
