Dr Sulemanu Koney
Ghana’s mining industry is set to experience enhanced efficiency and local value creation with the commissioning of the FLS Service Centre in Accra.
The facility, established by global mining solutions provider FLSmidth, is expected to transform equipment servicing, strengthen supply chains, and create employment opportunities for Ghanaians.
At the inauguration ceremony held at the Marriott Hotel on Tuesday(11 March) in Accra, Dr. Sulemanu Koney, CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, described the new service centre as a strategic investment that underscores Ghana’s growing reputation as a hub for mining support services in West Africa.
”The success of Ghana’s mining industry hinges on collaborative partnerships between government, the private sector, and key stakeholders. In that regard, I commend FLSmidth for its foresight in establishing this facility and for reaffirming its commitment to Ghana’s industrial and economic progress.
”As we celebrate this milestone, we must also look to the future of Ghana’s mining industry. Continued investment in innovation, sustainability, and responsible mining practices will be key to driving long-term economic transformation. The Ghana Chamber of Mines remains committed to working alongside all stakeholders to build an industry that not only generates wealth but also delivers lasting benefits to the people of Ghana.”
”Once again, congratulations to FLSmidth on this remarkable achievement. I have no doubt that the FLS Service Centre will be a game-changer, reinforcing Ghana’s leadership in mining excellence,” Koney said.
Strengthening Ghana’s Mining Industry
Dr. Koney emphasized that the mining sector remains a cornerstone of Ghana’s economy, contributing approximately 10% of GDP in 2024. He highlighted that the minerals industry accounted for over 60% of total export revenue, far surpassing the earnings from crude oil, cocoa, and inward remittances.
“Gold alone contributed more than 50% of total export revenue last year, solidifying Ghana’s position as Africa’s leading gold producer,” he stated.
Despite its significant contributions to the economy, Dr. Koney noted that the true value of mining extends beyond extraction—it is about technology, efficiency, and local expertise. He commended FLSmidth for investing in the FLS Service Centre, calling it a game-changer for the sector.
Impact of the FLS Service Centre
The new facility will among others provide world-class equipment servicing, spare parts, and technical support, leading to several key benefits including reduced 0perational downtime
Dr. Koney stressed that this investment aligns with the Chamber’s commitment to local content development and in-country value creation. In 2023 alone, the Chamber’s member companies procured goods and services worth $3.1 billion from local vendors, reinforcing the need for more strategic investments in mining support services.
Positioning Ghana as a Mining Hub
To further strengthen Ghana’s role as a regional hub for mining excellence, the Chamber recently collaborated with the African Center for Energy Policy (ACEP) to assess opportunities in the mining supply chain. The study highlighted key areas for local businesses to expand and maximize value from Ghana’s mineral wealth.
Dr. Koney called on other industry players to invest in local manufacturing, mining technology, and workforce development, stressing that partnerships between the government, private sector, and key stakeholders are essential for long-term growth.
“As we celebrate this milestone, we must also look to the future of Ghana’s mining industry,” he said. “Sustained investment in innovation, sustainability, and responsible mining will be critical to driving economic transformation.”
A New Era for Ghana’s Mining Industry
With a pipeline of new mining projects on the horizon, Ghana’s mining sector is set to expand its contribution to national development.
The FLS Service Centre is expected to play a pivotal role in this transformation, ensuring that technology, efficiency, and local expertise remain at the heart of the industry’s progress.
Dr Koney congratulated FLSmidth on its commitment to Ghana’s industrial and economic development, expressing confidence that the new service centre will redefine mining excellence in Ghana and beyond.
