Newmont
Newmont Corporation has released its 2024 Sustainability Report, detailing a year marked by both transformation and tragedy as the company integrates its acquisition of Newcrest while confronting critical safety challenges.
In a letter accompanying the report, the Chair of Newmont’s Safety and Sustainability Committee acknowledged 2024 as a “demanding and transformative year,” citing the loss of four employees during the year — including Cobbina ‘Cobi’ Morrison in Ghana — as a painful reminder of the risks in mining operations and the need for constant vigilance.
“These losses serve as a stark reminder that maintaining a fatality-free workplace demands unwavering vigilance,” the report notes. Newmont says it has launched a comprehensive review of its safety systems to strengthen risk mitigation and ensure that “everyone returns home safely each day.”
The committee, comprising members of the company’s Board of Directors, held quarterly meetings to monitor health, safety, social performance, human rights, environmental stewardship, and security concerns. It also engaged closely with management on the integration of Newcrest Mining, acquired in late 2023, and the company’s broader organizational redesign.
The committee approved the company’s 2024 Sustainability Report, including climate performance metrics and its Modern Slavery Statement, and consulted with PwC on independent assurance processes for selected disclosures.
Board members also conducted site visits in Australia and Mexico, engaging with frontline employees and safety and sustainability teams to gain deeper insights into operational realities and community relations.
Newmont’s report highlights ongoing efforts to reduce occupational exposure to harmful substances, including silica dust, diesel exhaust, arsenic, and welding fumes. The company also made strides in expanding its Respect at Work program and other employee wellbeing initiatives.
Security was another major focus area in 2024. Sites facing heightened security risks were cited for leveraging technology and stakeholder engagement to safeguard people and operations, with adherence to international best practices such as the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights.
Looking Ahead
Despite the setbacks, Newmont reaffirmed its commitment to responsible mining and sustainability leadership. “Our team worked diligently to fulfill our company’s purpose – to create value and improve lives through sustainable and responsible mining,” the report emphasized.
