The Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey (GCAG) is demanding the immediate declaration of a targeted state of emergency in regions plagued by illegal mining, following a violent attack on police officers during an anti-galamsey operation.
The group says the incident — captured on video — exposes the escalating lawlessness of illegal mining operators and the deadly consequences of unchecked environmental destruction. The assault came just days after a tragic helicopter crash linked to galamsey activities, which claimed the lives of eight security personnel.
GCAG has commended the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the officers who resisted the attack, but insists the situation now requires extraordinary measures. “When criminals attack state security with impunity, Ghana’s sovereignty is under direct threat. A targeted state of emergency is the only way to break the cycle of violence and environmental destruction,” the group said in a statement.
The coalition’s demands also include intensified joint police-military operations, seizure and forfeiture of illegal mining equipment, prosecution of financiers, and the dismissal of local officials whose negligence or collusion enables galamsey operations.
GCAG warns that unless decisive action is taken, Ghana risks losing not only its natural resources but also the authority of the state itself.
