Ghana’s Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has called for a forensic investigation into the disappearance of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) containers from the Tema Port
. These missing containers, which held critical electrical equipment meant for the country’s power distribution network, have sparked public outcry over potential misconduct and corruption.
Reports indicate that instead of reaching ECG’s warehouses, the containers were diverted through various means—some allegedly cleared from the port but never delivered, while others reportedly ended up in private factories or were auctioned at suspiciously low prices.
The controversy first gained attention following an investigative report that unearthed irregularities in ECG’s procurement process. Allegations have since surfaced, suggesting that some government officials and ECG executives may have been aware of the improper handling of the containers but failed to act.
In an interview on GHToday with Lily Mohammed, Mr. Jinapor welcomed the public’s interest in the matter, emphasizing that it reflects a collective demand for accountability. He revealed that his ministry had already begun tracking the missing containers using their unique identification numbers and the ports through which they were received.
He also disclosed that he had received multiple leads on possible locations where the containers might be stored, including warehouses and factories, and assured Ghanaians that immediate action would be taken.
“I’m very happy about the interest Ghanaians are showing. It means they want accountability. They want us to find these containers and hold those responsible to account. That’s exactly what we’re doing,” Jinapor stated. “This morning alone, I’ve received several calls pointing to different warehouses and factories where these ECG containers could be found, and we will be taking swift action.”
Beyond immediate retrieval efforts, the minister stressed the need for a specialized forensic committee to conduct a thorough investigation, retracing the movement of the containers and exposing those responsible.
“We need a small forensic committee to track these containers, using their unique identification numbers or serial numbers, and determine which ports they were received from,” he added.
The establishment of the forensic committee is expected to bring transparency and accountability to the investigation, ensuring that those involved in the disappearance of the ECG containers are held responsible.
