Ghana and the Republic of Korea have signed a visa waiver agreement for holders of diplomatic and service passports, marking a significant development in bilateral relations between the two countries.
The agreement was announced by Ghana’s Ambassador to South Korea, Kojo Choi, who described the signing as a historic milestone in Ghana–Korea relations.
According to the ambassador, the agreement was concluded during the Korea–Africa Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, where Ghana served as Co-Chair alongside South Korea in its capacity as Vice-Chair of the African Union.
The visa waiver arrangement allows holders of diplomatic and service passports from both countries to travel without obtaining visas, a move expected to facilitate official engagements and strengthen cooperation between Ghana and South Korea.

Ambassador Choi said the development follows efforts to deepen relations between the two nations after President John Dramani Mahama’s visit to South Korea in March this year.
He also commended Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa for his role in securing the agreement, noting that the minister had insisted on concluding the visa waiver arrangement before participating in the Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.
“This agreement is particularly meaningful to me,” Ambassador Choi stated in a social media post, adding that the minister’s determination and leadership helped accelerate negotiations leading to the signing.
The ambassador further acknowledged the contributions of staff of the Embassy of Ghana in Seoul and officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Accra, whose efforts he said were instrumental in achieving the agreement.
While the newly signed arrangement applies to diplomatic and service passport holders, Ambassador Choi indicated that efforts would continue toward expanding visa facilitation measures to cover holders of ordinary passports in the future.
The visa waiver agreement is expected to strengthen diplomatic exchanges and enhance cooperation between Ghana and South Korea in areas of mutual interest.
