Ghana has taken a decisive step toward a greener, low-carbon future with the launch of its first-ever state-owned electric vehicle (EV) charging station — a solar-powered, grid-interactive facility located at the Energy Commission premises in Accra.
Officially commissioned on June 25, 2025, by the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, the station combines renewable solar energy with lithium-ion battery storage and a grid connection, making it a versatile model for sustainable urban infrastructure.
“This facility marks a turning point in Ghana’s transition to clean transportation. It demonstrates our commitment to not only reducing carbon emissions but also building a resilient and innovative energy sector,” said Minister Jinapor during the commissioning ceremony.

But the station is more than just a charging point. Designed as a demonstration and research hub, it will play a central role in policy development, technical training, and the collection of critical data to scale e-mobility solutions across the country.
Representing the German Embassy, Franziska Jebens reaffirmed Germany’s support for Ghana’s development priorities. “Electric mobility is more than a technological advancement — it is a collective responsibility to protect our planet for future generations,” she noted, highlighting alignment with Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and 13 (Climate Action).

Dr. Dirk Aßmann, Country Director of GIZ Ghana, described the project as a “catalyst for systems change,” paving the way for an inclusive and robust green economy.
The project was made possible through the Sustainable Energy for Climate Protection (SECP) initiative, supported by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented in collaboration with the Energy Commission.

As Ghana accelerates its efforts toward decarbonizing the transport sector, the new EV station symbolizes a bold step toward sustainable urban mobility, powered by clean energy and international partnership.
