The Ghana Gold Board, in partnership with Gold Coast Refinery, has commenced the local refining of gold sourced from the artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector, marking a significant milestone in Ghana’s efforts to add value to its mineral resources and formalise the small-scale mining industry.
The commencement was highlighted during a tour of the Gold Coast Refinery led by the Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, alongside the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi.
The visit underscored government’s commitment to refining ASM gold locally to internationally accepted standards.

The initiative enables gold produced by licensed artisanal and small-scale miners to be refined in Ghana with full traceability, improving transparency across the gold value chain while supporting responsible mining practices. It is also expected to create jobs and strengthen local capacity within the minerals sector.
Speaking to the media after the tour, Dr Forson said the start of local refining represents a critical step in retaining more value from Ghana’s gold resources, reducing dependence on raw exports, and improving oversight of the ASM sector.

The partnership with Gold Coast Refinery aligns with broader efforts to formalise small-scale mining, enhance revenue mobilisation, and position Ghana as a competitive gold refining hub in the sub-region.
