Lands and Natural Resources Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah says Ghana’s battle against illegal mining (galamsey), cannot be solved overnight but requires consistency, coordination, and strong political will.
Speaking on GTV’s Breakfast Show on Wednesday 24 September, the Minister revealed that government is considering a decisive new measure — declaring all water bodies and forests as security zones.
He explained that this approach would make rivers and forest reserves permanently protected, giving security agencies the authority to act more decisively against illegal miners.
“Anyone who goes into these protected areas to engage in illegal mining will be doing so at their own risk,” Buah warned.
The Minister emphasized that while progress has been made with arrests and prosecutions, lasting solutions depend on reforms, stronger enforcement, and long-term commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s natural resources.
