The Minerals Commission of Ghana has condemned a violent attack on personnel of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) during a routine anti-galamsey operation in the Dormaa Central Municipality of the Bono Region.
In a statement, the Commission said it was deeply disturbed by the incident, which resulted in gunshot injuries to a NAIMOS operative and the death of another individual following an exchange of gunfire.
The Commission described the attack as unacceptable, stressing that acts of violence against state officials lawfully discharging their duties undermine national efforts to protect Ghana’s mineral resources, environment, and communities.
As the statutory regulator of the minerals industry, the Minerals Commission expressed its solidarity with NAIMOS operatives and commended their courage, professionalism, and commitment in the ongoing fight against illegal mining. It encouraged officers engaged in the operation to remain resolute, assuring them of the Commission’s continued institutional support.
The Commission extended its sympathies to the injured officer and his family, wishing him a speedy and full recovery, and conveyed its condolences to families affected by the incident. It also called on relevant security agencies to conduct the necessary investigations into the attack.
