The Tarkwa Mine Manager of Gold Fields Ghana Limited, Dr. Catherine Kuupol Kuutor, has stressed the need for mining companies to place the safety and wellbeing of host communities at the centre of responsible mining.
She said Gold Fields’ responsibility extends beyond the boundaries of its Tarkwa Mine, noting that the wellbeing of communities is closely linked to the company’s operations.
Dr. Kuutor made the remarks at the 2026 Zone One Inter-Mine First Aid and Safety Competition hosted by Gold Fields Tarkwa Mine on Saturday, August 15, 2026.
She said Gold Fields continues to work with community leaders, schools, emergency services, security agencies and other stakeholders to strengthen safety awareness and emergency preparedness in its host communities.
According to her, responsible mining should not be measured solely by production levels or economic output, but also by the quality of life that mining helps to protect and improve.

She said communities with strong safety awareness are better positioned to protect families, preserve livelihoods and support sustainable development.
“Safety-conscious communities protect families, preserve livelihoods and make development more sustainable,” she said.
Dr. Kuutor’s comments come amid ongoing discussions over the future of Gold Fields’ Tarkwa mining leases, with stakeholders calling for stronger engagement between the company and the Apinto Traditional Area.
