The European Union (EU) has expressed strong readiness to expand its collaboration with Ghana in addressing illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
Ambassador Skinnebach made the remarks after touring mining sites in Kyebi in the Eastern Region, where he witnessed firsthand the impact of illegal mining.
EU Ambassador to Ghana, Rune Skinnebach, said the bloc is open to doing more in support of Ghana’s efforts, but stressed that any intervention must be carried out in close partnership with the government.
“We are very willing to collaborate with Ghana on the galamsey issue… and we are ready to do even more, but always in partnership with the government,” he said.
His remarks come amid ongoing concerns over the environmental impact of illegal mining activities in parts of the country, including the Eastern Region.
